An animal neglect case in Washington resulted in an arrest Tuesday.

Washington Police Chief Jim Lester states at about 10:30 p.m. March 2nd his department responded to a report of a dog that was left unattended for at least a week at Lot 36 Parkside Estates Road. Officers observed through a window a dog that appeared to be in distress and was restrained in a bedroom with no food or water and was surrounded by feces. Entry was made and officers discovered the dog was emaciated and secured in a way that did not allow them access to food or water. Officers also found another dog in the residence that was deceased and in a state of decomposition. The injured dog was placed in the care of PAWS and More Animal Shelter, and on March 4th officers executed a search warrant on the residence.

The deceased animal was taken to the Iowa State University Department of Veterinary Pathology for examination. Two counts were filed for animal neglect resulting in serious injury or death, an aggravated misdemeanor, on 43-year-old Christopher Robert Reed. He was arrested in Fairfield and transported to the Washington County Jail where he is being held on a $4,000 cash bond. Town and Country Veterinary Clinic, City of Washington Animal Control, and the Washington County Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
